Wednesday Wisdom

Week 5

VISUALISATION

For today’s Wednesday Wisdom, we are looking at a slightly different form of meditation – visualisation. If you did yesterday’s activity based on ‘treating yourself’, you actually already started some visualisation with the meditation you did. So if you enjoyed that, you can build on it today!

The difference between the mindfulness meditations we have done so far, and visualisation, is that visualisation is more active. It involves guiding the mind and breath in a specific direction, and can be used for improving performance, increasing focus, lowering stress and bettering sleep.

“Visualize this thing that you want, see it, feel it, believe in it. Make your mental blue print, and begin to build.” – Robert Collier

There are a wealth of guided visualisation meditations that can be found online. Today, have a go at doing one – for example, this meditation is designed to help to purify our energy for a less stressful and hectic day. You could also try ones such as this, that are more focussed on achieving goals. Change into something comfy, find a calm and quiet place, and give it a go.

The 1995 film The Legend of Bagger Vance, based on the book of the same name, demonstrates a lot of practice of mental visualisation. Check out this clip.

This Headspace article is a great introduction to visualisation meditation – what it is, what it can be used for, and a short example meditation you can access for free at the end.
